Rawlins honors volunteers, appoints advisory‑board members and introduces new parks director

At its June 16 meeting the Rawlins City Council presented the June 2026 Community Builder Award to Kirk and Kristen Sherman for long‑running volunteer work in the community; the Shermans said they will donate the award money to Head Start.
Council approved several advisory board appointments by unanimous vote: Corey Claycom to the Rochelle Ranch Golf Course Advisory Board, Wesley Harrison and Chris Aetto to the Shooting Range Advisory Board, and Brett Wilts to a full position on the Shooting Range Advisory Board. The council also appointed sixth–eighth grade youth member David Pelum to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee; Pelum spoke briefly about wanting more activities for kids and dogs.
The council welcomed new parks and recreation director Billy Hunt, who said he started June 1 and outlined a 90‑day plan focused on facility inspections, strategic planning with advisory boards and quick repairs. Hunt said early tests of a soil/seed mix produced rapid grass growth in trial areas and that staff will prioritize irrigation repairs and maintenance to improve the city’s west‑end appearance.
A member of the public, Janita Colton, urged the city to repurpose the underused hockey rink as a remote‑control vehicle obstacle course to engage hobbyists and youth; the council thanked her for the suggestion and did not take immediate action.
The council’s approval of appointments and introductions were procedural votes that passed without recorded opposition.
