Rawlins council adopts FY2026–27 budget after debate over reallocations; final vote 6–1

The Rawlins City Council voted to adopt the fiscal year 2026–27 municipal budget after a final reading and discussion on June 16, 2026. The ordinance passed by a 6–1 margin; the lone recorded nay was Council member Alia.

Council members debated several modest reallocation requests during the hearing. One council member asked to move a $20,000 allotment intended for a fire department remodel to fund beautification and green‑space improvements on the city’s west end. City staff explained that existing seasonal parks crews and an irrigation repair line item already provide funds to address much of that work without changing the current budget, but council discussed whether a formal transfer would be required to prioritize those projects.

Council also reviewed several other budget details announced at the meeting: a $20,000 designation noted elsewhere for cemetery sprinkler improvements, a $22,000 fireworks contract for the Independence Day show, a net $15,148 increase tied to a 3% wage adjustment for the city attorney, municipal judge and city manager, and a $1,250 increase in the nonprofit expenditure line. The city manager said the nonprofit water and utilities support items were already included in budget packets and would remain in place.

Council members emphasized cost control and stepped‑up maintenance plans. Public-works and parks staff told the council a tested soil‑and‑seed mix is producing rapid results in trial plots and that irrigation repairs on the west end should be manageable within existing line items.

The council completed the final vote after the discussion; the budget ordinance now stands approved for the 2026–27 fiscal year. The city will proceed with the planned spending and any reallocations will follow the formal transfer process if council elects to amend departmental appropriations.

The council adjourned shortly afterward. Its next regular meeting is scheduled for July 7, 2026.
