VA official says staff returning to office will worsen parking; board holds parking change for later review

Bryan Carroll, Support Services Division Chief for the Department of Veterans Affairs regional office, told the West Milwaukee Village Board on April 7 that VA regional staff will begin reporting to the office five days a week starting May 5. "We will be about 250 parking spaces short," Carroll said, asking the Village to consider extending parking time limits on W. National Avenue and side streets between 47th and 56th streets to four hours, implementing alternating-side parking, or issuing paid parking passes.
The Board did not take immediate action. Village President John Stalewski said consideration of amending parking regulations on W. National Avenue and surrounding side streets will be held for the next board meeting so trustees can review Carroll's request. Trustee Schuettke recommended soliciting input from National Avenue businesses before making any regulatory changes.
Why it matters: The VA's shift back to a five-day on-site schedule could displace workers onto residential and commercial street parking, potentially affecting residents, businesses and transit along a busy corridor. Extending time limits or adopting paid/alternating parking would shift enforcement responsibilities and could generate new revenues or new compliance burdens for staff.
