Hawarden adopts ordinance raising cable rates; digital channels removed

The Hawarden City Council on Jan. 14 gave final approval to Ordinance 761, which raises the city’s cable-television rates and removes digital channels from its local cable package.
Staff told the council the new basic rate would be $43 per month (up from approximately $37.93) and the expanded-basic package would rise to $113 (from about $92.27). Presenters said the city had been losing money on the current broadcast arrangement and the adjustments reflect transmission and operating costs. Staff also said the city no longer has the ability to transmit digital channels; while the channel catalog remains available from providers, the city will remove digital channels from its local billing and begin pursuing alternative streaming/broadcast options.
Jacob said the new rates would be built into bills at the end of February for March’s billing cycle to give customers notice. The council opened and closed a public hearing at 5:46 p.m.; no members of the public spoke. Warner moved final reading of Ordinance 761 and Boza seconded; the ordinance passed on a 5-0 roll-call vote.
What happens next: City staff will post notices on the city website and social media and implement the rate change in March billing. The city said it will examine internet packages next and look for alternate streaming providers before changing that service.
