The Hawarden City Council discussed proposed edits to Zoning Ordinance 165 at its March 25 meeting but did not vote on any changes.
Council members reviewed two related issues: a proposed amendment to require that the zoning commission and the board of zoning appeals (BZA) not meet on the same day to avoid appearance and due-process concerns, and a separate set of potential changes the BZA is preparing that would alter size limits for detached accessory buildings. Council said the BZA will draft a recommendation and the council will review any proposed ordinance language at a later date. One council member said holding both hearings on the same day "is not best practice," and members agreed to avoid scheduling the two bodies on the same day while work continues on the ordinance language.
No formal motion or vote was taken; staff and the BZA will return recommended ordinance language for council consideration at a future meeting.
