Hayward council gives first reading to ordinance raising cable service rates

At the Nov. 12 meeting the Hayward City Council gave a first reading to Ordinance 761, which proposes adjustments to municipal cable-service rates and fees to cover rising vendor costs.
City staff explained that the utility has been absorbing costs and the proposed changes would bring rates closer to break-even. Staff initially described the proposed rates in the packet with some formatting errors, and then clarified actual monthly amounts proposed: basic service to $43 per month (from about $37.93) and expanded basic to $113 per month (from roughly $92.27). The ordinance also adjusts channel-package fees (minor adjustments noted for premium channels); the city will discontinue the digital package as the high‑tech utility winds down service at the end of December.
Council moved and approved the ordinance first reading by roll call vote 4–0. As a first reading, the measure will return for any required subsequent readings and adoption at a later council meeting.
