Polk County says $3M+ earmark cleared presidential approval for local CDL training campus

County officials told the commission they have secured federal earmark approval for a Polk County CDL training facility intended to expand local commercial-driver-licensing (CDL) training capacity.
"The earmark uh it's over $3 million for the campus and that the earmark has been signed and approved by President Trump and has now moved into the transportation uh committee at the federal level," the official said. The presentation said the county has been working with Lamar and the Texas State University System to develop the campus and will site it on property near the county landfill.
Officials said the earmark has moved through the administrative steps and that the county should expect documentation allowing it to move forward with a partnership with TSUS. The project is intended to reduce the need for local residents to travel out of the county for CDL training and to support regional industries that rely on qualified drivers, such as schools, trucking and logging.
No contract, timeline or funding-expenditure schedule was presented in the meeting record; commissioners said they were pleased with the progress and thanked staff and Dr. Stafford for navigating the process. The county indicated it will provide further updates once the documentation allowing formal action is received.
