Nonprofit announces community garden project for Rio Vista

Patrick Carpenter, vice president of the nonprofit Riva Vista Roots, told the Parks & Recreation Commission the group was approved by the planning commission to begin a community garden at 3rd and Saint Gertrude in Rio Vista. Carpenter said the project will start with 12 raised beds (8 by 4) and that the organization hopes to expand to 34 beds, add a greenhouse and potentially an apiary, and provide education on growing, processing and canning produce.
Carpenter’s remarks were provided during the meeting’s public-comment period and served as notification to the commission and the public that the project is forthcoming; planning approvals and any city permits required for construction remain in force as necessary. The project proponents encouraged community participation and outreach as they move into implementation steps.
