Council authorizes bids to remove two hazardous trees at Cass Park

Councilors authorized staff to solicit bids to remove two hazardous trees at Cass Park after Parks staff flagged them as immediate safety and liability concerns.
Amanda of Parks and Recreation told the council she inspected trees at Cass Park and identified two high-priority hazards: a maple near the ballpark fence that has several large, unstable branches and an ash tree leaning toward the concession stand that could fall within the next two years if not addressed. Amanda recommended removal and said the city should include these trees in upcoming bid packages so the work can be coordinated with other park and Swisher Drive work.
Council discussed costs, timing and options. Members agreed to go out for bids now to obtain cost estimates even though actual removal work may not occur until after September due to seasonal constraints and a busy event calendar (Fun Day and ball tournaments). Council asked staff to obtain three bids and to include stump grinding for an identified northern hilltop stump.
The motion to solicit bids passed by voice vote. Councilors noted the expense will need to be found in the budget or through reallocation; staff will return with bid results and financing options.
Next steps: staff will solicit three bids, return cost estimates to council, and recommend timing and funding sources.
