Bridget Fisher of the Defiance County Health Department briefed the Hicksville Village Council on the department's triennial community health survey during the Nov. 17 meeting.
Fisher said the survey, administered every three years, covers adults, school-age children and preschoolers. Surveys are sent to randomly selected households by Defiance College students and residents may also sign up through social media; Fisher said roughly 2,400 households were notified. The compiled data are made public and used to develop an action plan that addresses priority health issues such as elderly falls, dental care, substance abuse and mental health.
Council member Toni Egly asked how respondents are chosen; Fisher explained the student-driven random selection and public sign-up options. Rob Bailey inquired whether the health department still provides flu shots for uninsured residents; Fisher confirmed they do.
Fisher said all of the information gathered through the survey is publicly available and that action plans are then developed to focus on areas of urgency identified in the data.
