Second-graders showcase 'bug zoo' deeper-learning project; board honors long-serving staff

Waite Elementary second-grade students presented a deeper-learning unit on insects during the May 19 board meeting that the district said focused on research, presentation skills and 21st-century competencies.
Teacher Jennifer Upright introduced student projects that included a ‘bug zoo’ in partnership with Ohio State Extension and student-created presentations. Second-grade student Adeline Waite said participants learned about life cycles and habitats; student Monroe Mohammed said, "I just discovered a new insect called a ladybee," as part of her entomologist presentation. Another student, Ela Mohrman, described a 'fairy bug' and spoke about complete versus incomplete metamorphosis.
Following the student presentations, the board honored a slate of retirees for long service to the district: Sharon Ulter Storf (27 years), Julie Zavesky (24 years), Doug Smith (40 years, 33 of them at Medina High School), Kathy DeLucia (28.5 years, largely at Blake Elementary) and Jill Gordon (34 years, including 32 with Medina City Schools). District leaders praised their commitment to students and staff and invited them to accept applause and recognition from the board.
The presentation and retiree recognitions were part of the regular meeting program; the board thanked students, staff and administrators for their work and service.
