Medina board approves routine financial and superintendent items and adopts 2026—12031 strategic plan

The Medina City Schools Board of Education on April 21 approved a package of routine treasurer and superintendent action items and adopted the district's Strategic Plan for 2026—2031.
Treasurer-recommended action items G1 (financial report), G2 (supplemental to permanent appropriations) and G3 (resolution accepting amounts and rates and certifying necessary tax levies to the county auditor) were moved, seconded and approved on a roll-call vote.
The board also approved superintendent action items H1 through H7. Highlights of H items noted during the meeting included:
- Donations: a nearly $2,000 donation from the Cleveland Browns supporting the district's new girls flag-football program. - Facilities/projects: final approval to close out a pool-bleacher replacement (reported cost $107,000, shared 50/50), approval/recommendation to proceed with roof projects (Root/high-school PAC areas) with a local Medina contractor recommended for the high school work, and preliminary approval to allow the Rec Center to use the school district as a pass-through for procurement on a Rec Center tile and front-desk update estimated at about $200,000 (the district was not expected to commit school funds; the project remains subject to city council approval and a timing/reimbursement agreement). - Curriculum review: materials for two science curricula (Savvas Experience Science for grades 4—8 and McGraw-Hill Inspire Physical Science) were presented for board review and will return next month for a possible adoption vote. - Personnel: a slate of personnel recommendations and supplemental contracts were approved, and the board previewed retiree recognition at next month's meeting.
The board then moved and approved a resolution to adopt the Medina City Schools Strategic Plan 2026—2031. During discussion, members focused on Goal 2, Objective 2.2, which calls for developing a districtwide behavior and expectations framework to ensure consistent, equitable responses to student behavior. Board members and staff acknowledged survey feedback noting bullying concerns and said the objective includes educating the public about the state's legal definition of bullying (what triggers a required investigation and consequences) and differentiating that from incidents that call for other, nonstatutory supports.
