Board reviews $400,000 in paving work, rec center pass-through and proposed pool UV filter

Facilities committee lead Mr. O'Cole summarized recommended capital work for the coming summer and explained the rationale for a proposed pool UV filtration system.
Mr. O'Cole told the board the agenda includes nearly $400,000 in paving work across multiple sites — Ken Dukes (around the turf and track), Medina High School lot D (the last high-school lot to be paved since the 2000 renovation), Claggett playground, and teacher lots at Blake and Waite. "Almost $400,000 worth of paving this summer that you're going to be voting on this evening," he said.
He also clarified that a planned rec center lobby modernization is a pass-through project fully funded by the city, not by the district. On the pool, Mr. O'Cole outlined a UV filtration system intended to reduce the formation of chloramines and the need to over-chlorinate; he said the district expects chemical savings between about 30% and 50%, with a low-end annual chemical savings figure of nearly $4,000.
Board members asked technical questions about sterilization and equipment longevity; Mr. O'Cole and colleagues described UV as a sterilization step that would reduce corrosive chlorine exposure and improve conditions for bleachers, electrical equipment and the HVAC/fire systems in pool areas. The board will consider the projects as part of the consent agenda and facilities approvals.
