Medina board approves finances, temporary appropriations and new principal; ratifies OPSEU contract

At its May 19 meeting the Medina City Schools Board of Education approved several financial and personnel items including treasurer actions to publish financial statements and set temporary appropriations for fiscal year 2026–27, and superintendent recommendations for personnel and administrator contracts.

Treasurer Mr. Chambers reviewed year-to-date figures, saying the district’s fiscal-year revenue totaled about $103 million and expenditures were approximately $85 million, leaving an ending balance near $56 million after a recent settlement boosted receipts. "Revenues for the year, fiscal year $103 million, expenditures $85 million. Our ending balance, $56 million at this point," Mr. Chambers said as he walked the board through revenue and expenditure categories and multi-year forecasts.

The board moved and approved treasurer items G1–G4 (financial report; supplemental to permanent appropriations; preparation of financial statements for FY 2026–28; and 2026–27 temporary appropriations) after a motion by Mr. West and a second from Mr. Hare.

On personnel items, the board approved consent agenda items 1–11, including a resolution to present the Class of 2026 for approval before commencement (pending completion of graduation requirements). Superintendent Mr. Sable recommended Taylor Browse for principal at Sydney Fenn Elementary after a committee-based hiring process; the board approved the appointment. "She was just outstandingly impressive," Mr. Sable said of Browse following the committee interviews.

The board also voted to ratify the collective bargaining agreement with the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OPSEU) Local 305, effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029. The motion to approve the OPSEU agreement was moved and seconded and passed by roll call.

All motions noted in these items were approved by roll call votes recorded in the meeting minutes.
