Denton trustees approve 2024–25 budget, set $101,727.20 tax request and .482685 levy

The Village of Denton Board of Trustees unanimously approved the 2024–25 fiscal-year budget and adopted Resolution 24-9-1 to set levy authority at its Sept. 19 meeting at the Denton Community Center.

Trustee John Juricek moved to approve the budget and related levy authority; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously. Trustee Amanda Fangmeier moved to approve a property tax request of $101,727.20 and a levy of 0.482685; that motion also passed unanimously.

The board held public hearings on the budget and on the final tax request before voting; no members of the public spoke. Carmen Stanely of HBE presented the financials and told the board that "you cannot use tax funds to pay for utility funds," adding that keno funds transferred into water and sewer currently help those utility funds operate.

The board recorded a tax-request breakdown of $68,727.20 for non-bond purposes and $33,000 required for a water bond. During the meeting trustees voted to exceed the budget limit by an additional 1% of restricted funds for 2024–25 and separately to increase the 2024–25 tax request by 2.5%; both actions were carried by unanimous vote. The board then passed Resolution 24-9-1 (Levy Authority) before formally approving the budget.

The meeting minutes show the budget decisions were procedural and followed the required public hearings; the record indicates no public comment opposed the measures. The board also noted that an employee compensation discussion was tabled until the October meeting.

The board is scheduled to reconvene on Oct. 3, 2024, when trustees will consider the tabled compensation item.
