Abbot Public Library trustees approve vendor payments, meeting-room policy and model ship donation

The Abbot Public Library Board of Trustees on Oct. 6 approved routine vendor payments and policy revisions, accepted a donated model ship and discussed staff changes and possible small reductions to late-night service hours in 2026.
Director Kimberly Grad told trustees the library will close for Indigenous Peoples' Day and recommended closing at 5 p.m. on Nov. 26, the day before Thanksgiving; the board approved the Nov. 26 early closure. Grad also raised a proposal to reduce weekly late-night service hours from 52.5 to 50.5 in 2026 by shortening Monday and Wednesday evening hours to ease staff scheduling while maintaining required state funding compliance.
The board approved payments proposed in the director's report: an invoice to Superior Landscape for $1,593.00 and an invoice to Aneese Electrical Service for $7,488.41 using the Override Account, and a $31.80 charge to Gilbert & Cole Building Products from the Carten Gallery Fund for dowels used in the children's picture-book quilt hanging project. The minutes record the motions were seconded and approved; detailed vote tallies were recorded only for the approval of the Sept. 8 minutes (six 'Yes' votes recorded) and are not specified for the subsequent motions.
Trustees also approved revisions to the Meeting Room Policy, which include listing the Killam Teen Center Study Room. The board voted to accept a donation of a USS Constitution model for display; the library will research shelving or table space and prepare a proposal for installation.
Staff updates noted that Miguel Acosta began as a part-time custodian on Oct. 6 and that Veronica Rodgers was promoted to Circulation Supervisor effective Sept. 22; two positions (Technology Resource Specialist and Technical Services Assistant) remain open and are accepting applications. The director reported collaboration with the middle school librarian that resulted in distribution of 16 new library cards to students and described attendance challenges for children's programs related to nearby road construction and limited parking.
The Carten Gallery is exhibiting work by Don Hammontree through October with a meet-the-artist reception planned. Friends of the Library reported approximately $1,300 raised at the last book sale and outlined upcoming events, including a pop-up sale on Nov. 18 at the COA and a March 28, 2026 book sale. The Abbot Public Library Foundation will meet this week to plan its November annual-appeal approach.
