Demorest schedules second readings for blight, zoning and mobile-home ordinances; alcohol extension set for Thursday

Several proposed ordinances affecting land use and local code reached first reading at the April 1 Demorest City Council meeting and were scheduled for later consideration.
Council opened a first reading on an extension to the alcoholic-beverage ordinance following work-session discussion and struck the ordinance's ending period; the second reading was scheduled for Thursday at noon. Mayor Jerry Harkness called for public comment and none was offered during the meeting.
The proposed blight ordinance received a first reading; the council noted that Chief Scheuerer will be available at the May second reading to explain the ordinance's provisions. City Manager Mark Musselwhite reported that he, Jessie Owensby and City Attorney Thomas Mitchell are continuing work on a package of zoning amendments; those amendments and a proposed Mobile Home District ordinance were also presented at first reading and will return for second reading in May.
No council votes were required to move the items to second reading. The council recorded no public comments related to these items during the meeting. The city will return the ordinances to the council for formal action at their scheduled second readings.
