Rothschild board tables proposed ordinance on e-bikes and other personal mobility devices, seeks MPO review

On Nov. 10, 2025, the Village of Rothschild Board voted 7–0 to table proposed amendments to its code that would more clearly regulate e-bicycles, e-single wheels, e-multi wheels and gas-powered vehicles and to direct the village administrator to seek input from the Mountain Bay Metropolitan Planning Organization and connecting municipalities.
Administrator Ryan VanDeWalle told the board that village staff and the Mountain Bay Metropolitan Police Department have received “several complaints” about those devices operating recklessly on roadways, trails and in parks. VanDeWalle and Chief of Police Jeremy Hunt said staff want carefully crafted ordinances that will allow officers to enforce safety rules as new types of personal mobility devices evolve.
Board members stressed the need for consistency across municipal boundaries because local paths connect to neighboring jurisdictions. The board’s motion, made by Trustee Jason Jablonski and seconded by Trustee Sam Stroik, instructed VanDeWalle to discuss ordinance options with the MPO and adjacent municipalities; the motion carried unanimously.
The board did not adopt code language at the meeting. The action effectively pauses local rulemaking while staff seek regional input; the village will return the item to a future meeting after those consultations are complete.
