Westerville City Schools honors state-level athletes and student achievers

At its June 29 meeting the board recognized the Westerville Central girls softball state runners-up, multiple middle- and high-school track qualifiers and champions, fishing team honorees, and Business Professionals of America national placers.
The Westerville City Schools Board of Education opened its June 29 meeting with a series of recognitions honoring student-athletes and contest winners from across the district.
Mrs. Valentine led a series of presentations naming the Westerville Central girls softball team (state runners-up) and listing the roster; the board noted the team's 28–3 overall record, a 21-game win streak and several players and coaches earning postseason honors. Coach Mike Fields and Principal Don Sayre were acknowledged in the audience.
The board also recognized middle- and high-school athletes who qualified or placed at OHSAA track events, including state champions and students who will continue their athletic careers at collegiate programs (Simone Smith at Ole Miss, Robert Young at Indiana University, Elijah Harris at TCU and Casey Carlos at Ohio University were among those named). Walnut Springs students Anthony Thomas and Reeves Kukas were recognized for a second-place finish in the Ohio Junior Bass Federation State Championship and qualification for the Major League Fishing Junior World Championship.
Additional honors included the AAA Outstanding School Safety Patrol Award presented to Adeline Kenny and national recognition for Career Center students Lina Sneringer and Ambar Loya Sotomayor in Business Professionals of America competitions.
Board members and attendees applauded the students and their families. The recognitions were followed by a motion to approve a resolution formally recognizing the softball team, which the board approved.
