Madison County approves two land purchases, leases and risk-management contract

Madison County commissioners approved several property and service actions during their June 25 meeting. The board voted to buy a small parcel at 516 S Liberty Street in front of the Criminal Justice Center for $25,000 (the mayor said the property was tax-appraised at $18,000) to clear a gap in county holdings.
Separately, the commission approved a committee-recommended purchase of three parcels totaling about 15.3 acres on Old Denmark Road for $150,000 to provide additional space for the Highway Department and potential expansion of penal farm operations. Commissioner Bart said the sellers initially sought around $300,000 but negotiated to $150,000; a survey and standard closing steps were still pending.
The board also approved lease agreements for the Madison County Department of Community Corrections in Henderson, Lexington and Jackson, Tennessee, and approved a committee recommendation to continue risk-management services with Sunstar Insurance Company LLC as an interim arrangement after the county's risk-management director retired. Commissioners cited responsiveness from Sunstar during recent storm events as a reason to continue the relationship temporarily.
All measures were approved by voice vote on committee recommendations. Commissioners noted that additional due diligence (surveys and closings) remains before final transfer on the Old Denmark Road property.
