Police chief says approved candidate unreachable; borough will reopen search for part-time officer

At the Aug. 27 Union City Borough Council meeting, Police Chief David Pernice reported he had been unable to contact the candidate who had previously been approved for hire and said he now presumes that person is no longer interested. The chief told council he plans to reach out to the consortium list of 32 candidates and will check with the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams and send out letters.
Pernice said his ultimate goal is to hire two part-time officers but that only one position had been approved by the council; council members agreed to search to fill one part-time officer position. No formal motion to reopen or repost the position was recorded; the chief indicated next steps would include coordinating with Civil Service and sending candidate letters.
