County engineer says two rural bridges must close immediately; plans and costs to follow

Cerro Gordo County's county engineer told the board that WHKS bridge inspectors identified two bridges that must be closed immediately for safety.
The county engineer said one bridge — described in the hearing as at or near 180th and Quail — may be repairable through an internal, like-for-like replacement using county crews and a standard 39-foot trainer, but that the work would still need permits from the Corps of Engineers. A second bridge, south of 180th near Kildy Avenue, has a large drainage area and so extensive timber decay that staff will prepare plans and specifications and pursue contractor-led replacement and permitting.
The engineer characterized the timber piles supporting the structures as more than 75% decayed after winter damage and said both bridges would be closed "this week" with signage placed in advance of closures. He said one replacement might be handled internally next season if permits allow; the other will be a contractor project and the county will return to the board with plans and cost estimates.
County staff also said they will place advance 'bridge closed ahead' signage and warned closures will directly affect nearby properties; no final repair schedule or cost estimate was presented at the meeting. The county engineer pledged to provide pricing and update the board as permitting and design work proceed.
