Commissioner: Early voting underway for Aug. 4 primary; voter education ramped up

At the June meeting the Department of Elections reported that early voting is under way for the August 4 primary, newly scheduled after this year's shift from the typical June date. The commissioner highlighted a statewide voter-education push of videos, social and digital advertising and a voter pocket guide available online.
The commissioner noted the independent-candidate filing deadline for U.S. House races is Aug. 4 at 7:00 p.m. and urged voters and candidates to use vote.virginia.gov to check registration status, polling location and candidate information.
Staff told the board localities have completed preparatory steps, including officer-of-election trainings; the board later adopted updated training materials that split the course into two parts (officers and precinct leadership) and provides interactive lessons and certificates for completion.
The commissioner also previewed new items on the board's agenda tied to recently enacted statutes, including the policy implementing the personal-use prohibition for campaign funds and a forthcoming policy on removals of general registrars and electoral board members. The department said it will continue refining hearing procedures and provide clearer recommended findings and relief options to help the board adjudicate complaints consistently.
