Committee unanimous on routine items, approves student trip and superintendent evaluation

The Berkshire Hills Regional School District School Committee voted unanimously on a slate of routine and substantive items at its regular meeting.

Actions approved by unanimous vote included: - Approval of the minutes from the June 4 meeting. - Acceptance of a monitor (TV, mount, installation) donated and fully funded by the middle school student council; Carol Agale and Madison Godette were recognized for leading the council. - Adoption of two revised job descriptions: District Maintenance Supervisor (revised to require at least 10 years’ maintenance experience or equivalent and to remove a contractor’s-license requirement) and Skilled Maintenance (removing a previous task of storing athletic uniforms). - Approval of a teacher-led, weeklong student research trip to a shark-research station in the Bahamas for up to 14 students (teachers said estimated student cost is about $2,500; organizers will return with finalized safety and swim-test plans). - Renaming of the finance subcommittee to the “budget planning working group” to better reflect its advisory and planning role. - Acceptance of the superintendent evaluation advanced by the evaluation subcommittee; the evaluation praised the district’s high school building project and curriculum investments while identifying attendance and instructional recovery among areas for continued focus.

Committee members discussed steps to encourage earlier budget engagement by staff and the public and to register interested members for the Massachusetts Association of School Committees conference in Danvers in November. Several retirements and personnel appointments were also announced during the meeting.

All votes referenced above were taken by roll call and recorded as unanimous by the meeting chair.
