Residents press Grand County to fix unmaintained roads; commissioners schedule review and workshop

Daniela Kasilova (Granby resident) told the board that driving on Highway 40 felt hazardous because jurisdictional fragmentation—state, town and county—creates inconsistent maintenance and poor coordination. She urged the board to pass citizens’ concerns to the Colorado Department of Transportation during future consultations.
Another resident who was addressed by the chair as Mr. Davis criticized the county for long‑standing inaction, saying the county ‘‘refuse[s] to maintain’’ about 87 roads, that Road & Bridge has been understaffed and that the board should call the director to obtain lightweight plows and hire seasonal drivers. He urged a publicly noticed road hearing and a prioritized list of roads to be plowed.
Commissioners acknowledged repeated advocacy to CDOT for US 40 but noted limits on county authority to work on state routes. The chair said the board had previously ‘‘directed the staff to make a review of the various roads that we have in the county in terms of their maintenance status, and we'll be reviewing those in public.’’ Staff and commissioners agreed to schedule a focused workshop on county road maintenance, acceptance and dedications coordinated with Road & Bridge and Community Development.
No new budget appropriation was adopted at the meeting; commissioners discussed possible options including short‑term hires and equipment procurement and asked staff to return with findings and an implementation timeline.
