Council authorizes bids for trash collection (6–1) and adds $10,000 to H2O assistance program

Port Clinton City Council voted Dec. 10 to authorize the director of safety and service to solicit bids for trash collection and to add funds to a water-bill assistance program.
After discussion about whether to extend Republic Services’ contract for one year or seek new bids, Council Member Jerry Tarolli moved to authorize the Safety Service Director to send letters requesting bids for trash collection. Pat Hovis seconded the motion; a voice roll-call produced six votes in favor and one opposed (Cathy King). The motion carried 6–1.
Separately, the council approved a proposal by administration representative Mr. Below to add $10,000 to the H2O (Help to Others) program. The addition is intended to expand the pool of funds available to waive a recently added $12.50 water/sewer fee for qualifying residents; applicants must meet program criteria. Pat Hovis moved to authorize the additional funding for the remainder of 2024 and 2025, Margaret Phillips seconded, and the motion passed unanimously by roll-call vote 7–0.
The bid authorization requires the Safety & Service Department to proceed with solicitation; the H2O funding will be added to the program account to support fee waivers for approved applicants.
