Port Clinton mayor’s report: paving schedule, senior center repairs and new code‑compliance program

At the July 23 Port Clinton City Council meeting, the mayor’s report — read by Sandra Ostheimer, clerk of council — outlined near‑term operations and community events and said the city will take steps to address vandalism and code‑compliance.
Erie Paving has temporarily left town to finish work elsewhere and expects to return July 31 to place top coats on streets already under work; the contractor is about one‑third through Plan A Phase 1 and, weather permitting, Plan A Phase 1 is expected to be completed by the end of November, the report said. Council members later noted positive public feedback on road construction.
The Senior Center was closed for a few days last week to address an air‑conditioning failure and a rodent infestation; according to the minutes both issues have been addressed. The mayor’s report also flagged recurring vandalism and destructive behavior at public restrooms in Lakeview Park, Waterworks Park and Portage Park and said the city will install cameras and signage soon to curb damage.
Treasurer figures through June 30 show Bed Tax revenues of $96,709.27, Watercraft Tax revenues of $19,489.39 and Short‑Term Rental registration fees of $54,900.00.
Mr. Christman, the city’s economic and community development coordinator, said he has met with Sandusky’s code‑compliance division and is developing a similar program for Port Clinton; the effort will include fire safety inspections coordinated with Interim Fire Chief Gutman and a database of city addresses to track progress. Christman told council he has not yet started door‑to‑door outreach and is preparing the administrative framework.
The mayor’s report also listed community events: a J‑1 Welcome Event on July 29 and Port Clinton Day on Aug. 25 at 5/3 Field. No public comments were recorded in the minutes for the meeting, and several council committees reported no items for presentation.
The council adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
