Port Clinton mayor reports on J‑1 student housing, infrastructure work and community events

On seasonal labor and housing, he said about 550 J‑1 (Bridge USA) students came to Ottawa County this summer and reported ongoing struggles finding housing and community support. He said four students from Thailand and one from Turkey have returned home, while others from Taiwan are traveling; he and local partners (Pastor Jarrod Schaaf and Nicole Wade of Shores & Islands) plan to attend a national Myrtle Beach conference in November to discuss creating a community support group for J‑1 students.
The mayor noted local infrastructure activity: Erie Black Top has resumed work on an ongoing project; the stage at "The District" on Madison Street has been removed and Madison Street is now open (the stage will be taken down for the season), and hydrant flushing will commence citywide this week. He also said municipal docks will be removed from the Portage River by the end of next week.
Upcoming events and operational items listed by the mayor include: Bike to School Day on Oct. 9; a wetlands ribbon‑cutting on Oct. 10 organized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; parking‑lot sealing and striping in front of City Hall and county buildings; a Fall City‑Wide Clean‑up on Oct. 19; final brush pickup beginning Oct. 15 (one pass only); restroom winterization the week of Oct. 20 (except Portage Park restrooms remain open year‑round); and a community supply drive for hurricane victims in Asheville, N.C., organized by local businesses.
He also noted the city’s sister‑city relationship with Jamao Al Norte, Dominican Republic, and community events such as the Port Clinton Kiwanis Evening at the Races on Nov. 1. He mentioned Snip Snider’s 79th birthday as a community note. No formal council action followed these reports.
