President reports Best Western closure; Village announces recreation and K9 fundraising updates

President Stalewski told the Village Board on Dec. 1 that he had learned the Best Western hotel is closing after Nov. 30, citing pre-COVID financing issues worsened by the pandemic; he said the restaurant portion closed Nov. 18, the apartment building component will remain open and there is a potential buyer under discussion. He said the closure will mean a loss of tourism revenue for the Village.
Stalewski also reported community activity: the West Milwaukee Lions Club held a Thanksgiving food distribution that assisted 15 families referred by school staff and plans a similar distribution for Christmas. He attended a soft opening at the remodeled Central Field House, which now features new bleachers and a wooden basketball floor, and announced a recreation department fitness center at 1300 S. 109th Street with an open house scheduled for Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m.; membership options will be available to Village residents and employees.
Chief Shaundra Randolph reminded the board about the upcoming Shop with a Cop event and said a very generous donation had pushed fundraising for police dog K9 Kane past the initial goal, allowing the department to outfit a squad car and acquire equipment while the dog is in training.
Chairperson Schaefer reported that the WMCDA has Strong Neighborhoods grant applications to process and was discussing December meeting dates. Administrator Kim Egan said the Plan Commission recommended two Certified Survey Maps for public hearings to be held at the Dec. 15 Village Board meeting. DPW Superintendent Jason Jourdan provided project updates including near-completion of the Community Center CDBG work and a permanent traffic signal installation at National Avenue and Miller Parkway.
No formal board action was recorded on the Best Western matter during the meeting; the report was informational. The next Village Board meeting with public hearings is scheduled for Dec. 15.
