Police chief outlines K9 training timeline and fundraising; Shop with a Cop set for Dec. 12

Police Chief Shaundra Randolph briefed the West Milwaukee Village Board on progress for the department’s K9 program and related public-safety activities on Nov. 17.
Randolph said the department met with the school board to discuss policies for using a K9 in schools; Muskego’s K9, Tito, and his handler attended a demonstration for school officials. Officer Hertig will begin a 10-week training cycle with K9 Kane; the minutes state that initial certifications needed for school work will be completed after roughly four weeks, Kane will be therapy certified at graduation, and narcotics detection training is planned for next summer.
Chief Randolph reported the fundraising effort for Kane has collected approximately $5,000 to date, and a $2,500 donation from Palermo’s was pending at the time of the meeting. The chief also reminded the board that "Shop with a Cop" is scheduled for Dec. 12 at Target, and outlined staging and timing for officers and participants.
Separately, Randolph said the interior parts for a drone-equipped squad car have been ordered, exterior outfitting is complete, and six additional officers expressed interest in drone training. She noted the drone can be used for aerial photos of the Village.
The board did not take formal action on the K9 program or equipment during the Nov. 17 meeting; staff will continue implementation and fundraising activities and return when approvals or formal decisions are required.
