Green Committee backs concrete for sidewalk project; town has $1.1M TRIP grant

The Sharon Green Committee told the Board of Finance it unanimously supports using concrete rather than asphalt for a sidewalk replacement project around the Green, saying the higher up-front cost is justified to preserve and enhance the Green. The committee's recommendation was submitted to the BOF during the March 17 meeting.
First Selectman Flanagan said the town was awarded a $1,100,000 TRIP (Transportation Rural Improvement Program) grant for the project but that any additional funding to shift materials from asphalt to concrete would require approval by the Board of Finance and a Town Meeting. Mr. Bartram asked whether using concrete would change the project footage; Flanagan reviewed preliminary cost estimates in response.
Flanagan also noted a separate traffic-calming study is underway for the Shopping Center area; the State Department of Transportation will review the study and identify allowable measures, and any implementation funding would need BOF and Town Meeting approval.
Next steps: BOF and Town Meeting consideration would be required if the town moves forward with concrete or with recommendations from the traffic-calming study.
