Fruitport Community Schools board declines to expel student, approves 10-day suspension after closed hearing

Fruitport Community Schools Board of Education President Dave Hazekamp called a special board meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Monday, April 27, 2026, at the district central office in Fruitport. After approving the agenda, the board moved into a closed session under the Michigan Open Meetings Act Section 8(b) to hear a student-discipline matter concerning Student 1149662236.
On returning to open session at 6:28 p.m., the board voted on findings from the hearing. The board approved a motion stating that, pursuant to Section 1311(3)(a), the student "demonstrated, in a clear and convincing manner, that the firearm was not knowingly possessed," and that, per Section 1311(3)(b), the student had no prior suspensions or expulsions. The board concluded that expulsion under subsection (2) of Section 1311 was not warranted. The motion to adopt these findings passed on a roll call vote of 6-0, with one member absent.
The board then approved a resolution imposing disciplinary sanctions. The resolution states: "The Student shall be suspended for ten (10) school days, with seven (7) of those days being out of school suspensions, and three (3) of those days being in-school suspensions." The resolution requires the student to meet with the Graduation Advocate and Interventionist at Fruitport High School as deemed necessary, and directs regular progress updates to the superintendent and the board. During out-of-school suspension days the student is prohibited from being on school grounds or attending district functions without prior written approval from an appropriate administrator. The board recorded a 6-0 vote in favor of the resolution, with one member absent.
