Wythe County planners approve subdivision plats, hear county budget and infrastructure updates

The Wythe County Planning Commission on June 2 approved its May 4 minutes, heard staff reports on multiple administratively approved subdivision plats, and received updates from county officials on the budget and infrastructure.
Commissioner Christopher C. King moved to approve the May 4, 2026 minutes; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Rodney S. Dunford and passed unanimously. County Planner Lisa Shelton reported that she had administratively approved minor-subdivision plats for Hurt Farms LLC (Black Lick) and B. Dale Barker (Lead Mines), an adjoining-owner/lot-line revision for properties in Fort Chiswell, and a family subdivision for Jeffrey Osborne.
County Engineer Johnny Kincer said he has been reviewing Progress Park lots 10 and 35 and reported recent flooding in the county. Addressing drainage at the Foster Falls solar site, Kincer said, "The drainage issues may be because there are 700 sheep grazing the property and they are probably overgrazing it." Ex-officio Jesse Burnett told commissioners the Board had finished work on the county budget but the state budget was not final; the Board trimmed the county budget to address a $3.8 million shortfall and plans to draw from reserves, which county leaders said they prefer to avoid repeating in future years.
Deputy County Administrator Matt Hankins reported on funding for the cannery and an additional water tank, progress on a broadband project with Citizens, codification of county ordinances, and the upcoming Liberty At The Lake festival. Commissioners were also told the county burn ban had been lifted but could be reinstated if dry conditions persist, and staff expected a contractor to address chlorination issues at the Rural Retreat pool the following day.
The meeting recessed and reconvened June 22 for a scheduled Land Use Classification work session; the Planning Commission adjourned the June 2 meeting at 7:52 p.m. and set its next regular meeting for July 6, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.
