Abbey Road sewer work 35% complete; staff recommends limited thru-traffic closure

Wastewater Superintendent Ed Haller told the Utilities Committee the Abbey Road sewer project is about 35% complete along the current construction section and that the contractor has requested a closure to thru traffic for part of the work.
Haller said the closure would preserve local access while reducing traffic through the work zone and help limit wear on the single travel lane currently open to traffic; he said crews have repaired roughly a half-dozen major potholes in the lane and that concentrating traffic off that lane would reduce deterioration until resurfacing. “They have requested if they may have closure of the road, but only for thru traffic,” Haller said, adding that he is recommending the city move forward with that closure.
Haller also explained the new sewer ties into Harbor Light and that an older, smaller sewer running parallel north of the project will connect into the new main so properties north of that point will be carried by the new sewer. He told the committee he hopes the Abbey Road portion will be complete by the end of August, but said the overall project will continue into the fall and into next year to finish remaining sections and paving.
No formal vote was taken at the meeting on the requested thru-traffic closure; Haller said he is considering the closure application and recommended it to reduce construction-related impacts.
