The Mashpee Select Board voted on June 22 to deny a request to extend a MassDOT construction schedule on Route 28 (permit No. 20260084) for additional daytime work, citing repeated complaints from local businesses about detours, obstructed views and lost customers.
Board members and the Town Manager described numerous calls from affected business owners on Route 151 and the town’s belief that the state should respect the town’s request to pause daytime work during the busy summer season. The Town Manager said DPW had recommended a pause and sent the recommendation to the state; he said crews later resumed work despite that request, which frustrated board members and business owners.
Select Board members repeatedly asked why work could not wait until after Labor Day or be shifted to nights where feasible; several members said the town had previously accommodated extensions and expected better contractor scheduling, staging and signage. One member noted the state retains final authority to permit work, but the board said it wanted to register a formal denial to reflect local concerns.
The motion to deny the extended construction schedule carried unanimously. Board members said they will press the state and DPW for stronger staging and signage plans ahead of any fall work and will bring affected business owners into discussions.
