University Heights council meeting: appointment to CIC, emergency shower repairs approved, committees scheduled

At the Jan. 1 University Heights council meeting members approved several routine items, including an appointment and emergency repairs, and received departmental reports.
Council moved to appoint Councilmember Winifred Weizer as the council's representative to the University Heights City Beautiful Corporation board; the motion passed on a roll call in which Weizer abstained. Council approved payment to J. R. Sbrocco Plumbing for up to $16,150 to replace two Fire Department shower stalls after contractors discovered rotted subflooring and the need to replace some load-bearing joists.
Building Official Bill Bartley reported a rise in permitting activity in 2024, with 1,134 permits issued, $728,261.21 in permit fees collected and an approximate construction valuation of $51 million. Service Director Allen Pennington confirmed street equipment conversions for winter and staff promotions and hires; City Engineer Brenda Mockabee said the Silsby Water Main project will pause until street access is restored. Communications Director Michael Cook previewed the Mosaic newsletter and spring events.
Council confirmed committee meeting dates including a Committee of the Whole meeting Jan. 9 on the HR contract, a Safety Committee meeting Jan. 13, and a Service & Utilities Committee meeting on Jan. 15; the CIC will meet Jan. 16 for strategic planning. The meeting adjourned at 8:21 p.m.
