Urbana teacher, students propose memorial for unmarked Oak Dale graves and request fee waiver

Chris Endres, an American history teacher at Urbana High School, told the council on Sept. 17 that his students completed a design project and contest to create a memorial honoring unmarked African American graves at Oak Dale Cemetery. He said the cemetery board approved the winning design and that the total project cost is $4,719.81.
Mr. Endres asked whether the city could waive a $403.20 fee for pouring the memorial's concrete base. Council Member Scott asked for dimensions and Mr. Endres said the memorial would be approximately the size of a small bench; Council Member Thackery asked about timing and Mr. Endres expressed a preference to have the work finished by May. Mrs. Bean asked if Mr. Endres had pursued service clubs for support; Mr. Endres said Vernon Funeral Home approached the Lions Club.
Council did not take a formal vote on the fee waiver at the meeting; the request will appear on future administrative or council agendas as needed.
