Urbana remains under state-issued burn ban as fire chief cites drought conditions

Fire Chief Dean Ortlieb told the Urbana City Council on Oct. 1 that the city remains under a burn ban issued by the State Fire Marshal due to dry conditions tracked by the U.S. Drought Monitor.
Ortlieb said recent severe weather was managed through coordination among the fire department, law enforcement and public works, and he credited advance preparation and radio coordination for faster response and relief on scene. He added that the State Fire Marshal issued the ban and that it could be updated on Thursday.
Council did not take action at the meeting; Ortlieb's remarks were provided as an update for public safety awareness.
