Urbana council approves hangar door replacement at Grimes Field

Urbana City Council on Oct. 15 approved purchase orders not to exceed $30,950.75 to replace the North Terminal hangar door at Grimes Field, a cost the council directed be charged to the Airport Fund.
The action followed a Board of Control recommendation and brief discussion in which Director of Administration Kerry Brugger described the current door as obsolete — originally wood and later replaced with a style that now operates via an overhead sliding track — and said the city faces operational difficulties because the door is inoperable without specialized training. Grimes Airport Manager Drake Huffman said the lessee has already upgraded the hangar and that the new door would be operable immediately after installation.
Ms. Truelove moved to place the Board of Control request on the floor; Mr. Thackery seconded. The council approved the purchase by roll call vote (Mr. Scott, yes; Mr. Davis, yes; Ms. Truelove, yes; Mr. Thackery, yes; Mrs. Bean, yes; Ms. Jumper, yes), 6-0.
Brugger told council the chosen vendor will install the replacement door and that a waiver of liability related to installation is part of the arrangement. Council members expressed support for keeping the hangar usable for multiple entities and matching lessee upgrades.
The expense was noted as not included in the 2024 budget and will be charged to the Airport Fund. The council did not identify a separate funding offset during the discussion.
The council approved the purchase during the Oct. 15 meeting; the replacement is intended to address immediate operability and safety concerns at the North Terminal.
