The Urbana City Council voted 7–0 on Oct. 1 to authorize a three‑year lease-to-own purchase of a 2025 Freightliner M2 dump/plow truck from Fyda Freightliner, including upfitting by Kalida Truck Equipment, at a total cost of $231,326.85.
Superintendent of Public Works Chad Hall told council the purchase is intended as a replacement after the City sold an older, poor‑condition truck in December 2023 and experienced another truck failure in June. Hall said the breakdown left the Street Division short a vehicle during plow season and highlighted continuing utility digs that keep crews working through leaf and plow seasons.
The purchase will be paid over three annual payments of $77,108.95; the 2024 budget included $65,000 and the remaining payments will be included in the 2025 and 2026 budgets. Council indicated the vehicle will be built to Ohio Department of Transportation specifications and pricing, and the expense will be charged to the Capital Improvement Fund — Street.
Councilmember Thackery moved to place the Board of Control recommendation on the floor; Mrs. Collier seconded. After brief discussion, the council approved the motion by roll call: Scott, Davis, Truelove, Thackery, Collier, Bean and Jumper — all voting yes.
Next steps include executing the lease-to-own contract and scheduling the truck upfitting to ODOT specifications; the finance office will reflect the remaining lease payments in the 2025 and 2026 budget plans.
