Swisher council appoints Brian to fill mayor vacancy; oath pending

The Swisher City Council voted to appoint Brian to fill a mayoral vacancy, after councilmembers discussed Iowa Code posting requirements and noted that the only applicant had been unable to attend the meeting because of a family emergency.
Councilmembers said the city must comply with statutory posting requirements when making appointments, but members also expressed a desire to complete the appointment so the new mayor could attend upcoming community events. A motion to appoint Brian was made and seconded and carried by roll call. Council noted the appointment will become effective once Brian contacts the city and takes the oath of office.
The council did not record any public comment on the mayoral appointment at the meeting. The motion to adjourn followed the appointment.
