Committee discusses county-wide housing study and department grant updates

Vernon County Community Development Director Amy Oliver told the Economic Development Committee on Aug. 2 that staff plan to conduct a county-wide housing study through the UW–Madison Extension Community-Led Housing Study Program and recommended forming a Vernon County Housing Task Force to guide the work.
Amy Oliver said she and Hannah Altimus attended a City of Viroqua Housing Advisory Board meeting and that the city supported a county-wide study. The committee did not vote on the study at this meeting; staff listed the housing study and formation of a task force as next steps.
Oliver also reported the department expects to close eight state and federal grants by year-end (five FEMA-funded) and is awaiting updates on generator grants. Economic Development staffer Larkin Breckel highlighted outreach activities including a Vernon County Awards Banquet, business outreach initiatives, a monthly newsletter and planning for the 2025 marketing plan. UW–Extension educator Hannah Altimus noted an EPA grant submission to support a full Business Workshop Series, upcoming Inventors and Entrepreneurs Club events, and a recap of Kickapoo Conversations.
