Swisher mayor resigns after county election; council accepts and discusses appointment process

During the Nov. 11 meeting the mayor announced she had won a county-level election and would resign effective tomorrow at 11:59 p.m., saying the service had been "a huge learning experience" and that she looked forward to representing small-town interests at the county level.
Council moved and unanimously approved acceptance of the resignation. Members reviewed the process for filling the vacancy: written appointment requests had been due Nov. 7, but the council may appoint at any time; absent an appointment the mayor pro tempore assumes mayoral duties and retains the right to vote but not the mayoral veto authority.
Councilors congratulated the outgoing mayor and briefly discussed whether to solicit candidates or allow the mayor pro tem to continue until the next election. "If nobody comes forward the mayor pro tem legally has to take over," a councilor said. The council did not appoint a successor at the meeting.
Next steps: staff will continue to accept any written requests for appointment if submitted, and the council will revisit an appointment if a candidate steps forward prior to the next scheduled meeting.
