The Sayville Union Free School District Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting and administered oaths of office to several officials before electing board leadership for the 2026–2027 school year.
Sarah Maxwell was sworn in as district clerk, Dr. Mark Ferris received the oath as superintendent of Sayville Public Schools and Eleni Costello was sworn in as district treasurer. Thomas Cooley was sworn in as a trustee.
The board then moved to elect leadership. Christine Sarni was nominated and elected president of the board. "I, Christine Sarni, do solemnly swear ... to faithfully discharge the duties of president of the Board of Education," Sarni said during the oath. Kelly Sack was nominated, accepted and was elected vice president; members applauded both leaders after the vote.
The board approved its meeting calendar as amended to move the July 30 meeting to Monday, Aug. 3 to accommodate scheduling conflicts and the need to swear in the incoming superintendent. The motion to approve the amended calendar passed by voice vote.
The board also approved a package of appointments and reauthorizations during the session, carried several consent motions and acknowledged donations reported in the consent agenda. Before adjourning the reorganization portion, the board called a public hearing to receive comments on the district’s health and safety plan.
The meeting then recessed into executive session later in the evening to discuss a vendor contract. The public portions of the meeting ended after routine business and approvals.
What happens next: the board will reconvene in public for business and may take final action on items after the close of the 30-day comment period for the safety plan.
