At a Jan. 5 meeting, the Village of Denton Board of Trustees discussed proposed multi‑year increases to water and sewer rates and scheduled a rate‑study presentation by the Nebraska Rural Water Association ahead of ordinance introduction.
Trustees and staff reviewed options from a rate study framework and noted the board will consider formal ordinances at its next meeting after a presentation from Randy Hellbush of the Nebraska Rural Water Association. The proposal discussed would phase in a three‑year water adjustment that includes a $7 annual increase to the flat water rate and a $1 increase per 1,000 gallons of usage each year. Proposed sewer adjustments discussed were flat increases of $4 in year one, $5 in year two and $5 in year three. No ordinance was adopted on Jan. 5.
Board members emphasized the need for the rate study presentation to explain the assumptions behind the numbers, how costs will be allocated among customers, and whether changes would cover operation, maintenance and capital needs for the water and wastewater systems. The clerk noted the board plans to invite Nebraska Rural Water Association to the next meeting to “expound on the rate study.”
Because no ordinance was introduced or voted on during the meeting, the increases remain proposals. The board expects to consider ordinance language at the next regular meeting after the rate‑study presentation.
