Emergency services outlines regional MCI plan, EMS academy and a new assistant position

Deputy Emergency Director Bonnie Vanhousen briefed the Allegany County Public Safety Committee July 1 on multiple emergency-services initiatives and received committee approval to create an Emergency Services Assistant position.
Vanhousen said staff are working on a Western New York regional MCI plan to standardize response language and items after a bus crash in Batavia highlighted cross-jurisdictional coordination needs. She also reported that the EMS summer academy began with five students in an intensive eight-week program and that CPR training is underway as part of summer employment and certification efforts.
Vanhousen explained the county is compiling a comprehensive EMS plan using framework material from New York State's guidance; the plan and supporting numbers must be submitted to the New York State Department of Health by December to identify service gaps and potential funding opportunities.
On staffing, the committee approved a reorganization that will eliminate an account clerk-typist position and create an Emergency Services Assistant to provide day-to-day administrative support for both fire and EMS. Presenters said the change will create a small shortfall that they plan to absorb in the EMPG grant budget and that the reorganization will support the county's accreditation efforts. The motion carried by voice vote.
What happens next: Vanhousen will work with HR and finance on posting and filling the new position per civil service and union rules, and staff will continue compiling the EMS comprehensive plan for submission later this year.
