Public Defender reports $100,000 DCJS grant; committee approves allocation and intern pay

Public Defender J.R. Santana Carter told the Allegany County Public Safety Committee on July 1 that his office had received a $100,000 non-competitive grant from the Division of Criminal Justice Services and asked the committee to formally accept and appropriate the funds.
Carter said the grant has already been deposited and recommended the award be split evenly between the public defender's office and the conflict defenders' office so both offices can staff and allocate resources fairly. "This funds is to be dispersed and divided amongst our office and the conflict's office," he said, and proposed a 50/50 split.
The committee moved and approved the acceptance and appropriation of the DCJS grant by voice vote. During discussion Mrs. Berdick asked why some funds were carried over into the current year; Carter explained timing of dispersal and that a junior accountant vacancy slowed tracking, leaving about $31,000 unspent that will be allocated once accounting procedures are completed.
Separately, the committee approved paying the DA's summer intern (listed as an "office aid") after members discussed the value of compensating local interns and whether the student was receiving college credit (Carter said she was not).
What happens next: funds will be formally appropriated in county accounts as approved; the public defender's office and the conflict defender's office will allocate their portions per the approved split, and the DA's office will process the intern stipend.
