BET committee approves police use of E-911 funds for overtime and a distracted driving grant

The Budget Committee on April 14 approved two Police Department funding requests. The committee voted 4-0 to authorize PD-7, a transfer of $85,685.46 from the state E-911 fund to cover dispatcher overtime caused by a shortage of about five dispatchers. Captain Patrick Smyth told the committee that two dispatchers have been hired and are in training, a third is expected by month-end, and a fourth is anticipated in July. Smyth said the E-911 allocation is distributed quarterly by the state based on call volume and must be used or returned.
The committee also voted 4-0 to approve PD-8, authorizing use of a $19,224.32 Distracted Driving Enforcement grant. Captain Smyth said the grant is 100% state-funded and requires no town match; the funds will be used for overtime associated with enforcement efforts. Both approvals were recommended by the committee as routine items.
