BOE study finds Greenwich elementary classrooms nearly full; several schools projected over capacity

Dr. Toni Jones, superintendent of schools, and Ben Branyan, the Board of Education chief financial officer, presented an MP Planning Group Elementary School Capacity & Utilization Study to the BET Budget Committee on April 14. The study, first presented to the BOE on March 19, found the district has 298 full-size classrooms and uses a planning capacity of 21 students per classroom (a 90% efficiency standard).
The study projects district-wide utilization will average 96% over the next five years and peak at 98% in 2030–31. Several schools are projected to exceed 100% utilization, specifically Glenville, North Mianus, North Street, Old Greenwich and Riverside. The pair said the BOE capital plan includes work intended to address capacity challenges at those buildings.
The presentation was informational; no committee action was taken. Committee members heard that consolidation of facilities is not supported by the study because district-wide capacity is insufficient to permit consolidation without creating new overcrowding elsewhere.
