Beaufort County elections board adds county office as second early voting center for May 12 special election

The Beaufort County Board of Voter Registration and Elections voted unanimously on March 25 to add the county elections office as a second early voting center for the May 12 special school‑board election.
The Facilities Committee recommended the move after staff presented pros and cons of hosting early voting at the county office in Beaufort rather than only at precinct sites. A motion to add the office as a second early voting center was moved, seconded and carried without opposition.
Jean, the board’s director, said early voting for the May 12 election will run April 27 through May 8, Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., and that voters may use either the Bluffton Branch Library or the county office. "Early voting is April 27 to May 8," Jean said. She noted that, as of the previous afternoon, seven absentee ballots had been requested for the office location and that poll workers and mandatory briefings have been scheduled for the site.
Chair called the vote and recorded that it passed unanimously after members responded “aye.” Committee members said staff estimated the incremental equipment and staffing effort to host the additional center would be negligible.
Staff warned that some school‑based polling locations remain subject to change pending school‑district availability; Scott Community Center on St. Helena is under renovation and those voters will be redirected to the St. Helena Branch Library, which will host two precincts for the June primary. Because of school availability the director said some June locations remain tentative.
The board was reminded that the canvass hearing to certify the May 12 election is scheduled for Thursday, May 14 at 10 a.m.; the board must attend to certify results. The director also outlined poll‑worker training and assignment timelines, noting mandatory briefings were rescheduled to take place after the May canvass hearing and that staff are contacting workers who did not complete availability surveys.
